Senior Cat Care Mistakes

August 15, 2022

Did you know that cats are considered seniors at only age nine? Fluffy can live well into her teens or even her twenties with good care, so she typically enjoys a pretty long retirement. However, she will need a bit of extra care as she ages. A Cornelius, NC vet lists some common senior kitty care ‘faux paws’ below.

Letting Fluffy Become Obese

Let’s be honest: older cats aren’t exactly the most active animals on the planet. Sleeping pets are adorable, but your feline buddy’s napping hobby also makes it easy for her to pack on pounds. Keep your kitty’s weight under control! Watch portion sizes, and play with your furry pal daily.

Poor Food

Good nutrition is key at this stage of your furry buddy’s life. Ask your vet for specific advice, including tips on choosing brands and switching to a senior-formula food.

Lack Of Grooming

Our feline pals are very diligent about keeping up with their beauty rituals. However, Fluffy may become quite stiff and sore, which will make it hard for her to groom herself. (This is why older kitties sometimes look a bit unkempt.) Brush your cat regularly. This is also a good time to check for things like redness, inflammation, lumps and bumps, or sensitivity.

Stress

Cats are quite emotional little furballs. Major changes, other pets, noise, moves, boredom, stress, and depression can all take a huge toll on Fluffy’s mental and physical well-being. Keep that motor going! Offering kitty luxuries, like senior-friendly litterboxes, nightlights, pet ramps, and comfy beds, will help a lot here.

Not Grounding Her

While all cats are safer staying indoors, kitties in their golden years are particularly vulnerable to threats from cars, weather, and other hazards. Keep Fluffy in!

Ignoring Warning Signs

Older cats are more susceptible to certain illnesses and injuries than their younger counterparts. Fluffy also instinctively tries to hide signs of weakness, so you’ll need to keep a close eye on her. Monitor your kitty’s food and water intake by filling her bowls at the same times every day. Also, pay attention to what you find in the litterbox. If you note anything unusual, have your feline friend checked out immediately. Many issues are both cheaper and easier to treat when they are caught early.
