Summer can be hard on our feline pals. Fluffy has a fur coat on, and she can’t really cool off by panting or sweating, the way we can. As your kitty ages, she’ll become even more susceptible to temperature extremes. Read on as a Cornelius, NC vet offers some advice on keeping a senior cat cool.
Dead fur and dander make your kitty uncomfortably hot and itchy, and they interfere with the way her fur naturally insulates her. Brushing Fluffy regularly can help quite a bit. It’s also a good way to make your kitty feel pampered.
Hammock beds are a great option here, as they allow air to move beneath them. You can make one just by tying a piece of material to a table with four legs. You can also put a cold towel in your pet’s bed. Most cats don’t care to have fans pointed at them, but having one in the room will help move the air.
Did you know that you can find ice cream made just for Fluffy? You can also try offering her some chilled tuna over ice, or perhaps an ice cube made from sodium-free broth. Just stick with things that are safe for your furry pal.
Keeping your cat hydrated is extremely important. Remember to change the water out every day. You may need to set out more than one watering station, especially if you have a large yard and/or more than one kitty. Fluffy may also appreciate a pet fountain.
This is a cute one! Try giving your cat an ice cube to smack around. Because those cute toe-beans are temperature sensitive, this can both entertain your feline friend and help her beat the heat.
Your furball may enjoy going outside, but she’s much safer in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners. Keep Fluffy safe and sound inside when it’s really hot!
If there’s one thing that cats are very, very good at, it’s getting comfortable. Your furry friend will naturally seek out the coolest spots. You may find her stretched out on the kitchen or bathroom floor. This is because tile tends to stay cool.
