Keeping an Old Dog Comfy in Summer

July 1, 2021

Do you like summer? Or are you already tired of the heat? One of the great things about North Carolina is that we enjoy the best of both worlds: we get seasonal changes, but we’re often spared the worst weather. However, our summers can still get pretty hot. That can be tough for our canine friends, especially as they get older. Here, a Huntersville, NC vet discusses keeping Fido’s tail going in the heat.

Comfy Bedding

One of the best things you can do for an older pup is make sure he has a comfy bed. Fido may appreciate a raised bed in summer. These stay cooler than regular beds, because the air can move between them. They also offer great support. You can also give your pooch frozen towels to relax on.

Cooling Vests

Modern technology is coming up with all sorts of cute ways to pamper our pets. The cooling vest is a great option for pups that really struggle with the heat. There are several types, so do some research before purchasing one. For a quick DIY option, just soak a bandana and hang that around Fido’s neck.

Climate Control

Dogs get more sensitive to temperature extremes as they age. Fido will also have a harder time going from cool to hot areas, and vice versa. Protect him from the worst of the heat by keeping him in cool or shaded areas, preferably in spots with climate control.

Parasite Control

Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can all make your four-legged buddy miserably itchy. They also carry dangerous diseases, as well as other parasites. Keep up with Fido’s preventative care!

Grooming

Brushing Fido regularly will also help protect him from the heat, especially if he has thick fur. Some pooches are more comfortable with clipped coats in the summer. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Paw Care

Dogs can easily burn their paws on scorching hot tar or pavement. Try to keep your pup on grass or dirt as much as you can. You can also use paw balm to protect your canine buddy’s feet.

Water Fun

If Fido likes swimming, by all means indulge him. Just don’t leave him near water unattended. Your furry friend may also enjoy having a kiddie pool to splash around in.
