6 Ways To Treat Bad Breath In Dogs

August 1, 2022
Do you wince when your pup licks your face affectionately? If so, you’re in good company. Fido has many wonderful qualities, but fresh breath isn’t one of them. As it turns out, August 6th is Fresh Breath Day. While this is meant for humans, it certainly applies to our canine companions. Some of our four-legged patients have breath that could kill plants! A Cornelius, NC vet offers some suggestions on how to improve that doggy ‘death breath’ below.

Veterinary Care

Bad breath is often a sign of periodontal disease. However, it can be indicative of many different health issues. If your canine buddy’s breath is particularly stinky, set up an appointment with your vet. This becomes urgent if you’ve noticed any other symptoms, such as vomiting, fever, or lethargy, as this could be an indication of a serious medical issue.

Brushing

Needless to say, it’s not a good idea to just try sticking a toothbrush into Fido’s mouth: you’ll need to work on training first. At first, just gently rub your furry buddy’s gums as you’re petting him, then give him a treat. Once he’s used to that, you can incorporate a pet toothbrush and some doggy toothpaste.

Treats

Choosing the right treats can also make a difference. Softer foods often leave heavy plaque buildup, so opt for crunchier ones. Dental formula doggy treats, of course, would be the go-to here. Carrots and apple slices are also good options, as they can help remove plaque. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Water

Hydration is of course crucial for your pup’s overall health and well-being: it’s also important to his oral health. In summer, set out extra water stations, and drop ice cubes into Fido’s bowl to encourage him to drink more.

Dental Products

There are quite a few different doggy dental products on the market, including oral rinses and dental flakes. These all help fight plaque and tartar, which in turn can fight bad breath. Ask your vet for more information.

Tongue Brushes

There are usually more germs on Fido’s tongue than in the rest of the mouth. Consider getting him a doggy tongue brush. Just supervise him carefully when he is using it. Ask your vet for tips on this. Please contact us, your Cornelius, NC animal clinic, with questions or concerns about your pet’s health or care. We’re here for you!
