6 Ways To Keep Your Dog’s Teeth Healthy In 2022

January 1, 2022

Happy New Year! If you have a dog, it’s probably safe to say that Fido will be your biggest cheerleader as you work towards your goals for the coming year. Don’t forget to include him in your resolutions! One good resolution that we can recommend is to make a point of keeping up with your pup’s dental health. Our canine companions are just as susceptible to dental issues as we are, but this area of their care is often overlooked. A Huntersville, NC vet offers tips on keeping Fido’s smile in good condition below.

Brushing

We know, brushing Fido’s teeth may sound like it’s easier said than done. And, to be fair, in many cases, it is. However, it may not be as difficult as you think, especially if you use a yummy flavored toothpaste and teach your furry buddy that he’ll get a snack after. Ask your vet for training tips.

Dental-Formula Treats

Not having any luck teaching Fido about getting his teeth brushed? There are other products that can help fight plaque and tartar. These include dental flakes, oral rinses, and dental-formula treats and chews. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Water

Making sure your furry friend is properly hydrated is crucial to his overall health, but it’s also good for his teeth and mouth. If you know or suspect that Fido doesn’t drink enough, consider getting him a doggy fountain.

Chew Toys

Did you know that chewing is good for dogs’ mouths? It keeps Fido’s jaw muscles strong, and stimulates the flow of saliva. Ask your vet for advice on picking safe, suitable chew toys.

Exams

While some doggy dental woes, such as broken teeth, are easy to see, that isn’t always the case. Some will only be spotted by a trained eye. Have your canine buddy’s teeth checked regularly.

Watch For Warning Signs

Fido can’t really tell you if his teeth hurt, so it’s important to watch for red flags. Some common ones are bad breath, excessive or bloody drool, visible tartar and/or damage, changes in appetite, and reduced interest in play. Your pooch may also seem grumpy or withdrawn. Or, he may dribble food or chew on one side of his mouth.
