Things To Ask Your Dog’s Kennel

January 15, 2023

Are you planning to board your dog this year? It’s never easy leaving your four-legged buddy behind, but our animal companions can’t go everywhere with us. Boarding is generally going to be your best and safest option for making sure Fido is well taken care of in your absence. However, there are things to research and consider when choosing a kennel. A Cornelius, NC vet lists some things you would want to ask about below.

Health Requirements/Paperwork

This is a big one! Avoid any kennel that does not require proof that your canine buddy is current on key vaccines, such as distemper, parvovirus, and Bordetella. (The only exception really would be if you board with your vet, as they would have Fido’s records.)

Fido’s Schedule

This may vary from kennel to kennel. However, Fido should be able to go out at least 2-3 times a day. You may also want to find out about playtimes.

Facility

There is a caveat here, in that there may be restrictions due to Covid. However, most of the time, you should be able to see the facility where your pooch will be housed.

Packing

Kennels all operate a little differently. This is one area where that really comes into play. You may be able to bring your furry buddy’s bedding, toys, and treats. However, some places prefer to use their own things, often to ensure that everything is being properly cleaned and disinfected, and won’t bring fleas or germs in. Find out what you should and shouldn’t pack for your pup. (Tip: always include a few days’ extra food, treats, and medicine.)

Emergency Procedures

This is hopefully—and most likely—a moot point: kennels are usually very safe. However, there’s always a chance that something could happen, whether it’s a fire, an earthquake, or a medical emergency. It’s best to be clear, just in case.

Booking Time Frames

Don’t assume that there will be a spot open when you need it. The holidays are a known busy time, but it may also be helpful to know that your canine pal’s hotel is filling up fast for mid-July.

Add-Ons

Many kennels offer various perks and add-ons, such as brushing, washing, training, nail trimming,  extra playtime, or even doggy daycare. It never hurts to learn more!
