Reasons to Adopt a Senior Pet

November 1, 2020

November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! This is one cause that we are more than happy to support. Dogs and cats in their golden years make very sweet, loving pets, but they often have a very hard time getting adopted. If you’re ready to adopt, please consider getting an older pet. A Cornelius, NC vet lists some reasons why in this article.

Sweet Demeanor

One of the best things about older pets is the fact that they often develop a very sweet, calm personality. Fido may want nothing more than to spend time with you, collecting belly rubs and ear scritches, while Fluffy just wants to doze off in her favorite bed.

Less Destructive Habits

By the time Fido and Fluffy reach retirement age, they’ll have pretty much outgrown bad habits like digging, chewing, and knocking everything off countertops. They just want to relax and work on their napping skills. That’s a definite bonus!

Lower Activity Needs

Another great bonus of having an older dog or cat is the fact that they don’t need as much exercise as their younger counterparts. Fido will be happy to faithfully plod along beside you on a slow, relaxing walk. As for Fluffy, a short play session will do just fine for her workout.

No Surprises

Puppies and kittens are super cute, but it’s hard to say exactly what they will look or act like as adults. This can be an issue with dogs, particularly regarding size, as so many places have restrictions against bigger dogs. WIth an older pet, what you see is what you get!

They’re Adorable!

Many people find themselves smitten with older dogs or cats after spending just a little time with them. Fido looks very cute with a grey muzzle, while Fluffy is super adorable when she curls up in your lap or nudges you to pet her. You can’t help smiling when watching an older pet peacefully snoring in the sun.

Love

Our animal companions provide us with unconditional love, which is a rare and beautiful thing. Senior pets have just as much love to give as any other pet, and they’re often super loving and grateful to their humans. Purrs and tail wags from these guys really are very special.

Please contact us if ever we can be of assistance. As your Cornelius, NC pet hospital, we’re here to help!
