DIY Kitty Toys

February 15, 2023

Do you find a tiny mountain of cat toys every time you move the couch? Does Fluffy play with new things for a few days, then ignore them? It’s important for your feline pal to have lots of suitable playthings, but you don’t have to break the bank buying them. There are actually some great homemade options! A local Cornelius, NC vet lists some ‘purrfect’ ones below.

Catnip Mice

Two things happen when Fluffy gets into her favorite plant: mischief and comedy gold. Catnip isn’t expensive, especially if you buy it in bulk or grow your own. First, take two pieces of cloth and cut them into the same shape. (It can be a mouse, but your furball really won’t care what her plaything looks like.) Put one on top of the other with the outsides facing in, and then sew the edges together, leaving just a small hole. Turn them right-side out again, and then fill with catnip by stuffing it through the hole. Finally, close up that hole. Done!

Toilet Paper Rolls

The cardboard tubes from toilet papers may not seem purrticularly entertaining, but you can do all sorts of things with them. Stuff them with catnip, and fold the ends shut. Or, use a non-toxic glue to attach some brightly-colored feathers to it.

Cardboard Boxes

Make your own Whack-A-Mole kitty game by cutting round holes in a box. Double it with a small ball to keep Fluffy adorably amused. Box castles are also fun for cats. Attaching dangling toys will make them even more entertaining.

Cat Towers

Cat towers serve several purposes for our feline overlords: they provide napping spots, scratching posts, and vantage spots. You can make one by repurposing an old bookshelf or stepladder. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, start from scratch using PVC pipe, lumber, or even real branches. Cover the finished product in sisal rope, and make sure it offers plenty of flat, smooth napping spots for your sleepy pet to relax and look cute on.

Crumpled-Up Paper Ball

This may be the easiest option on the list … but it may also turn out to be Fluffy’s favorite. Cats often can’t help but run after a crumpled-up piece of paper, even if only out of sheer curiosity.
