Boarding Kennel Myths

January 1, 2023

Happy New Year! Do you have travel plans for the coming year? While your pooch may be more than happy to accompany you on a short road trip, he unfortunately can’t go everywhere with you. If you’re flying, going on a cruise, or just going somewhere that isn’t right for Fido, you may need to board him. Many people feel bad about bringing their pets to kennels, but that’s in large part due to common misconceptions. In fact, this is usually the best option! Here, a Cornelius, NC vet dispels some myths about boarding.

Fido Will Be Bored

We’ve learned a lot about our canine buddies over the past century. It’s now widely understood that dogs need stimulation to be happy and healthy. Any decent kennel will let Fido out regularly for walks and exercise. Many kennels also offer add ons for things like extra play time or doggy daycare. It never hurts to ask!

My Dog Will Get Sick

Good kennels are diligent about cleaning, and will require proof of Fido’s vaccinations and parasite control, and will also enquire about his general health and any special medical conditions or needs he has. If they don’t ask for this paperwork, then go elsewhere. These are just standard precautions, so if they aren’t enforcing that, they may be letting other things slide as well.

Cages Are Cruel

Sure, Fido would probably rather be on your sofa than in a kennel. However, kennels are the best way to keep him safe and secure. Your pooch will get plenty of chances to stretch his legs and play. The main thing is he’ll be safe, sound, and well-cared for.

My Pup Will Be Lonely

Fido will be able to see, hear and interact with the kennel staff and ‘guests’, and he’ll be checked on and cared for throughout the day. Let your pooch get used to one place, so he thinks of it as his home away from home. That will be easiest on you both going forward!

Tips

Myths aside, we know it can be hard to leave your furry bff behind. The best way to ease the process? Find a great kennel, ask all the questions, and bring Fido in for an overnight stay as a trial run. Ask your vet for recommendations.
