Spring Cat Care

April 15, 2022

Spring is officially upon us! While we may not get the extremely cold winters our neighbors to the north do, we definitely do feel some seasonal effects. Our feline pals have a way of getting themselves into mischief. Spring definitely offers lots of opportunities for that. A Cornelius, NC vet lists some seasonal kitty care tips below.

Take Care With Bouquets

Are you planning a big Easter gathering? If you set flowers out, keep them out of your kitty’s reach. Many of those colorful plants are poisonous to our feline friends. Lilies are at the top of the list here. Any true lilies, including Tiger lilies, Easter lilies, Peace lilies, Stargazer lilies and Daylilies, are very poisonous to cats. In fact, most plants with bulbs are toxic to pets. That list also includes tulips, irises, daffodils, and edible (for people) plants, like garlic, onions, scallions, and chives.

Keep Up With Parasite Control

As the weather gets warmer, we’ll be seeing lots of insects, from fleas and ticks to bees and wasps. Make sure that Fluffy is up to date on her parasite control products.

Use Chemicals Carefully

Kitties are very sensitive to toxins. Many of the everyday items you would find in the average household are toxic to Fluffy. That includes cleaning agents, detergents, and lawn/garden products, such as fertilizers. Pesticides, such as snail bait and rodenticides, are also unsafe. Your cat only needs to walk through a recently-treated spot or get something on her paws or coat to ingest it, as she’ll instinctively lick herself clean.

Plant Safely

This is the time of year where many people turn their attention to their gardens. Others may just want to take advantage of sales to pick up some new houseplants. Be sure to only get things that are safe for your furry buddy. Check the ASPCA site here for suggestions.

Get Fluffy Fixed

If your furball is still intact, talk to your vet about scheduling spay/neuter surgery. This is the time of year that many of our feline buddies are looking for love. While a litter of kittens may be cute and fun, it’s important to remember that there is still a huge pet overpopulation problem. Don’t let Fluffy contribute to it with unexpected litters.
