Tag! Fido's Identification

April 2, 2022

April 2nd is Every Day Is Tag Day. This unofficial pet holiday was created to help raise awareness about the importance of proper tags. Those tiny items could one day save your beloved pet’s life! A Cornelius, NC vet offers some tips on getting Fido’s ID tags below.

Include Pertinent Info

When customizing Fido’s tags, the most important things to add are your name, your dog’s name, and your contact information. Remember to get new ones made if you move or change your number. It’s also a good idea to include a backup number for a friend or family member, someone you trust with your furry friend.

Offer A Reward

We always recommend adding ‘Reward’ to your canine pal’s tags. If someone finds Fido, this is a great motivation for returning him to you!

Stop The Jingle …

Do you find the sounds of Fido’s tags jingling annoying? Get some with plastic holders. That will keep the noise down.

… Or Add A Bell

Is your canine pal hard of hearing? Add a bell to his collar. This will help you keep track of your pup’s whereabouts.

Go Modern

It’s not a bad idea to get a collar that is equipped with GPS. This can be a huge help if your four-legged friend ever gets out! There are already several different types to choose from. Do some research before choosing one. Some work on bluetooth or wifi, while others use subscription services. The subscriptions are more expensive but ultimately also more reliable, as they work with cell phone towers. Look at range, battery life, and other perks.

Don’t Skip The Chip!

Tags definitely do not cancel out the need for chips. Fido really should have both. While tags are the simplest option, there’s always a chance that your pooch could slip out of his collar. Chips are permanent, and form an invisible bond between you and your canine buddy. Of course, you’ll need to keep the information current in the chipmaker’s database. (Tip: try using the AAHA Microchip Lookup Tool here to check your records.)

Choose Wisely

You can get dog tags in almost any color, and of many different materials. Have fun with this, and customize them! Just make sure the tags don’t have any sharp edges.
