Fall Care For Senior Dogs

November 1, 2021

It’s getting chilly out there! While some of our furry patients enjoy the cooler weather, others definitely prefer summer. Older dogs often need some extra TLC at this time of year. If your canine buddy is in his golden years, read on! A Huntersville, NC vet discusses seasonal care for Fido in this article.

Beds

A comfy bed is a must! Orthopedic beds are great choices for dogs, as they will cushion Fido’s bones and insulate him from cold floors. Your four-legged friend may also appreciate a thermal blanket.

Grooming

Did you know that dead fur and dander will interfere with the insulating properties of Fido’s fur? They can also form mats and tangles in pups with long coats. Keep up with Fido’s grooming needs. You may want to take him to a groomer. This can be especially beneficial if your pooch has a hard time getting in and out of the tub. Groomers have tables and equipment that are easy for older dogs to get on and off.

Food/Supplements

Fido may need bigger portions at this time of year, as he may burn extra calories just staying warm. He may also benefit from certain supplements, particularly if he has arthritis or hip dysplasia. Cold and/or damp weather often tends to aggravate these conditions, so he may get quite stiff and sore. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Walks

You’ll probably be taking your canine pal out after dark quite a bit over the next few months. Make sure Fido has a leash or collar that is reflective and easy for drivers to spot. You may want to get a leash with a flashlight attached. Be sure to wear boots or shoes with good tread, especially when snow and ice enter the picture.

Paw Care

Fido’s furry feet will need some extra attention at this time of year. Paw balm or wax can keep them moisturized, and can help protect them from snow, salt, sand, and ice. Stock up on pet-safe deicing agents.

Tail Wags

As it starts to get cold, your canine friend may not feel much like playing outside. You can keep him active indoors; you just need to choose spots with soft carpets and plenty of room.
