Keeping Your Cat Happy Indoors

September 1, 2021

September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month! Many people know what Fluffy’s basic needs are: good food, fresh water, a clean litterbox, and, of course, proper veterinary care. Another thing that will go a long way towards keeping your feline buddy in good health is keeping her indoors. Of course, Fluffy may not take well to being grounded, especially if she’s been allowed outside before. In this article, a local Cornelius, NC vet offers some advice on keeping an indoor cat content.

Set Ground Rules Early

You’ll have much better luck with this if you teach your furball the rules from Day One. This also applies to other kitty laws, such as getting on counters. If you have a kitten, start young. It will be more difficult getting an older cat to stay in, but be patient. In time, even former strays sometimes lose all desire to go exploring.

Offer Entertainment Options

Indoor cats don’t get as much stimulation or exercise as outdoor kitties do. You’ll need to provide your furry buddy with lots of entertainment options. Toys are of course the obvious choice here, but Fluffy can also amuse herself by watching birds and squirrels, sniffing pet-safe plants, and investigating things like boxes, paper bags, and newspaper tunnels.

Attention

Fluffy is quite independent, but she’s also very emotional, and will be much happier if she feels loved. Pay lots of attention to your kitty! Of course, some of our furry friends are more affectionate than others. You should never force attention on a cat: that may just get you scratched. If your pet isn’t very cuddly, pamper her by talking to her, playing with her, and giving her toys, treats, and

catnip.

Beds

Our feline overlords are collectively very tired, and spend the vast majority of their time napping, snoozing, or dozing. Offer your tired little furball lots of comfy spots to choose from. In cold weather, Fluffy will enjoy having a bed in a bright, sunny spot, or perhaps near a heating vent. In summer, she may prefer cooler areas.

Kitty Comforts

Small touches will go a long way towards keeping Fluffy comfortable. If you’ll be out after dark or overnight, leave a light and a radio on for her. Older cats will appreciate pet ramps and stairs.
