Small Dog Care Tips

January 1, 2021

Do you have a small dog? Our canine pals come in all shapes and sizes, and we love them all! However, your pet will have some different care needs than a Saint Bernard would. Read on as a Cornelius, NC vet offers some tips on caring for small dogs.

Choose The Right Products

When shopping for your pooch, be sure to only get products that were specifically made for little dogs. Fido could choke or injure himself on things made for larger breeds!

Watch The Weight

It’s not uncommon for little dogs to be overweight. Even giving Fido ten calories too many each day can cause him to gain a pound a year. That’s a lot for a pup! Ask your vet for advice on serving sizes and suitable treats.

Take Care Of Fido’s Teeth

Dental problems are also quite widespread in our canine companions. Overcrowding, for instance, is often an issue with little pups. Keep up with Fido’s doggy dental care!

Don’t Neglect Training

People often think that, because Fido is little, training isn’t as important. This isn’t the case! Even small dogs can bite. You also need to be able to control your dog. Teaching your pet simple commands like Sit, Stay, Come, and Heel will help keep him safe.

Watch The Weather

Many smaller breeds, like Chihuahuas, get cold very quickly when the temperatures drop. Even fluffier pooches often hate walking on snow and ice. If Fido has thin fur, he may need sweaters or jackets to keep him warm on chilly days.

Pick Suitable Playmates

Littler dogs often suffer from Napoleon syndrome. They seem to see themselves as much bigger than they actually are, and won’t hesitate to go after much larger dogs. This can be a bit dangerous! Choose your pet’s buddies wisely.

Offer Pet Ramps

Jumping on and off couches may not sound risky, but little dogs can hurt themselves falling even short distances. Consider getting Fido some pet ramps.

Enjoy Your Pet

One great thing about small pooches is that they are often very cuddly. After all, many of them were bred specifically as companion dogs. There’s a lot to be said for having a dog that can fit in your lap without smooshing you!

Please do not hesitate to reach out if ever we can be of assistance. As your Cornelius, NC  veterinary clinic, we’re here to help!
